50 of mountain biking’s top riders came from near and far to make history racing the Bell Super Enduro at Demo – the first-ever legally sanctioned race at Soquel Demonstration State Forest.
Due to permit restrictions, the inaugural race was limited to these 50 participants, with 177 applicants vying for the coveted spots. Race participants were selected on their ability to finish the intensely rigorous race within an allotted time.
Racers ranged in age from 18 to 57, including 8 women and 19 Santa Cruz County locals. The field was evenly divided between racers over 30 and racers under 30. Mark Weir, Ross Schnell, Jason Moeschler, Jeff Kendall-Weed, Aaron Bradford, Duncan Riffle, Ariel Lindsley, Abigail Hippely, Kathy Pruitt, Matthew Slaven, Mary Moncorge, Ben Cruz, Barry Wicks, Katie Holden, Mike West, Nathan Riddle, Curtis Keene, Henry O’Donnel, Max Houtzager, Joanna Petterson and Ryan Condrashoff were among those selected.
The physically and technically demanding course was made even more challenging by recent rain. Racers enjoyed the superenduro format, which allows for the camaraderie of an everyday ride while sharing the competitive spirit of the event, and out-of-town racers were stoked to return to Demo trails another time.
